How tax works on invoices in India
In India, GST is currently 18% by default, and tax is usually added on top of your prices. Registered businesses show their GSTIN on the invoice. You can change the rate or turn tax off if it does not apply to you.
What a GST invoice must include in India
A valid GST tax invoice in India must carry specific fields under the CGST Rules. Missing fields can make the invoice invalid for input tax credit.
Your name, address, and GSTIN.
A consecutive invoice number (up to 16 characters, unique for the financial year).
Invoice date and, where registered, the recipient’s GSTIN.
HSN code for goods or SAC code for services.
Taxable value, plus the tax split: CGST and SGST for intra-state, or IGST for inter-state.
Place of supply for inter-state sales.
CGST, SGST, and IGST
For a sale within the same state, GST is split into CGST and SGST. For a sale to another state, a single IGST is charged instead. The default here is 18%, and GST is currently charged in slabs of 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, depending on the goods or service.

Common questions
What currency should I invoice in for India?
Invoices for India are typically issued in INR, which is selected automatically here. You can change the currency at any time if you bill international clients.
Is this a GST-compliant invoice?
On the India setting the invoice includes your GSTIN, HSN or SAC codes per line, place of supply, and the tax split (CGST and SGST for intra-state sales, or IGST for inter-state). Fill in your details and download a GST-ready PDF. Check the current rules with your tax advisor before filing.
What is the difference between a tax invoice and a bill of supply?
A registered business charging GST issues a tax invoice. A composition dealer or a business supplying exempt goods issues a bill of supply, which does not charge GST.
